Jim Chancellor

Jim Chancellor is a decorated Vietnam combat veteran, speaker, author  and advocate dedicated to educating Americans about the true cost of war and the importance of supporting those who serve. As a door gunner with the 119th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, Jim experienced the realities of combat firsthand. On April 21st. of 1970 his helicopter was shot down to the jungle floor. For what happened both in the air and on the ground  he was awarded the Purple Heart and a Heroism Medal for Valor for his bravery in combat.

Jim is married to his wife Regina, and together they share a blended family of five children and 9 grandchildren, who remain a central source of pride and inspiration in his life. 

 

Now 77 years old, Jim continues his mission to bring healing, awareness, and understanding through his powerful presentations. Known for his sincere, low-key style mixed with intensity and humor, Jim shares deeply personal stories about war, survival, and the long emotional journey many veterans face after returning home. His message focuses on the psychological toll of war and the responsibility of future generations to understand the true weight of sending soldiers into combat.

Jim’s story and voice have reached audiences across the country. He has appeared on stage with Bob Hope, made a special presentation to country music legend Toby Keith, and worked alongside Congressional Medal of Honor recipients Sammy L. Davis and Gary Wetzel. Throughout his speaking career, he has shared platforms with prominent national figures including President Ronald Reagan, Colin Powell, Vice President Al Gore, Ross Perot, Hillary Clinton, and President Barack Obama. His powerful message has also been presented at Veterans of Foreign Wars national conventions and other national events.

In recognition of his service and lifelong dedication to veterans, Jim was inducted into the Indiana Veterans Hall of Fame in 2016.

Beyond the stage, Jim has spent decades giving back to his community. Shortly after returning from Vietnam in 1971, he helped organize and participated in a 50-mile walk to raise funds for POW-MIA families in Indiana. Over the years he has volunteered extensively, coaching youth football and softball teams and mentoring individuals with special needs through programs in Northwest Indiana. His teams won numerous tournaments, including two state championships.

Jim played a  played key role in the renovation of several veterans memorials in Northwest Indiana. He served  as President of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee at Stoney Run County Park, where his words remain engraved on the memorial honoring those who gave their lives for freedom.

Today, Jim serves as the Mentor Coordinator for the Lake County, Indiana Veterans Treatment Court, continuing his commitment to helping veterans rebuild their lives.

When he’s not speaking or volunteering, Jim enjoys adventure and the outdoors, from whitewater rafting many of the more challenging rivers across North America to hiking  the back country.

Jim Chancellor has been described as a man on a mission — a mission of healing, education, and remembrance. His presentations challenge audiences to understand that war does not end when soldiers return home, and that the responsibility of caring for those who served belongs to us all.
